3D Printed Gun Found During Reno TSA Security Check

Brian BeltzBrian Beltz

Early Monday morning, Reno TSA security officers discovered a plastic, 3D printed gun in a passenger’s carry-on luggage.  The firearm, according to the TSA, was loaded with live ammunition.

While finding firearms during security screenings is surprisingly common – this firearm was one of 68 found just this week – the emergence of a plastic gun confirms fears that many law enforcement authorities have expressed over 3D printing. Weapons made from plastic are a great deal more difficult to find during security screenings.

The revolver (which has been reported as a replica) is absolutely a real gun, despite being made of plastic and printed at home.

In light of the finding, expect the Transportation Security Administration to ramp up screenings, something they reportedly have been working with the ATF on since 2013.  With the considerable amount of open TSA jobs, the agency may need to speed up the hiring process to address this issue.

The TSA allows guns in checked luggage – in locked cases and declared by the traveller – but recommends checking with local laws if traveling with a 3D printed weapon.  While the agency concedes that most often offenders have no ill intent in mind, passengers that violate firearms regulations can be subject to fines up to $11,000 and even face jail time.

Thats so crazy that people are now 3d printing guns and they are made out of plastic so they can get away with it and not get detected by the metal detectors. I don’t know if this is very dangerous because a bullet would be detected as its metal. But i know are getting creative and making some cool looking guns with 3d printers. Thanks for the article!
