For many, summer means great weather, long-awaited vacations, and no school. But the summer season also brings unique risks and dangers: more time outside can mean an increased risk of sustaining injuries in a serious accident.

Don’t let the fear of an injury keep you from enjoying your summer season. Put safety in your own hands by becoming well-informed of potential summer dangers and how to mitigate injury. By following the three summer safety tips below, you can help prevent injuries and improve the well-being of your family this summer season.

Use Caution at Amusement Parks

Amusement parks are a common destination in summertime, often offering fun for the whole family. While most people assume amusement parks are safe, they can be dangerous. In 2019 alone, the United State Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported there were 1,299 injuries from amusement park accidents in the United States.

While deadly injuries are rare, most injuries are soft-tissue injuries and injuries to the head and neck. “The areas of the body that suffered the most injuries include arms, face, and legs,” note injury lawyers at BMW Law Group, “if you are worried about the ride or see something that doesn’t look right, inform the operator or get off the ride.”

If you see something off on a ride or a hazard, such as a spill on a walkway, say something. Wear proper fitting clothing to ensure nothing will snag or get caught on rides, wear comfortable shoes, drink plenty of water, and rest when necessary.

Wear a Bicycle Helmet

Riding bikes is a great way to enjoy the summer sun, but do so safely by wearing appropriate protective equipment. A fall from a bicycle accident can be dangerous and result in cuts, scrapes, or even a brain injury.

According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, “Helmets provide a 66 to 88% reduction in the risk of head, brain and severe brain injury for all ages of bicyclists.” Head injuries are responsible for nearly three-quarters of cyclist deaths. Before pedaling to your next summer adventure, opt for a helmet to reduce your risk of sustaining a serious brain injury.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

The sunshine is one of the best parts of summer, if you enjoy it responsibly. Drink adequate water during the summer months, especially when in extended periods in the heat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend drinking enough fluids to stay hydrated as you may not be able to drink enough to catch up with your body’s need for water if you become dehydrated.

In addition to protecting yourself internally, you should also be wearing physical sun protection to reduce your risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, and lightweight long-sleeved shirts and long pants are all recommended to protect yourself from harmful effects of the sun.

Summer Safety Still Means Summer Fun

By following these three crucial safety tips, you can contribute to a fun and safe summer for everyone. Putting safety first means enjoying your summer with a reduced risk of sustaining an injury. Whether your summer plans have you on a road trip, biking on the beach, or visiting an amusement park, keep these summer safety tips top of mind. Enjoy the summer safely!
